Daniel Sferra:

Hello everyone, and welcome to Beckett Talks. My name is and we’re very excited to launch this new project here at Beckett. So, what is Beckett Talks? Well, Beckett Talks is a new series that we’re launching today where every week we’ll be sitting down with someone from Beckett, so different Beckett team members every week to discuss the topics that matter most to the heating industry.

This week we’re talking about training; something that Beckett has really put an emphasis on for engaging their customer base. And with us today is Jeff Rozga. He’s the Director of Training at Beckett. Did I get that right, Jeff? Is that the right title?

Jeff Rozga:
Technical Trainer.
Daniel Sferra:
Technical Trainer, okay. So welcome, Jeff. So as we get going here, I know there’s a lot of techs and contractors that have gotten to know you over the years, but let’s have you tell our listeners a little bit about you, your career at Beckett, and what your role is now.
Jeff Rozga:
Okay. Yeah. I’m one of the technical trainers for the R.W. Beckett Corporation in northeast Ohio. I’ve been with the company just a little over 44 years, and my number one responsibility is providing technical training to the heating contractors throughout the United States.
Daniel Sferra:
Cool. So, you said you’ve been here 33 years with Beckett?
Jeff Rozga:
It’s 44. It’ll be 45 this summer.
Daniel Sferra:
Wow, that’s a long time.
Jeff Rozga:
Yeah.
Daniel Sferra:
So, the thing that we really wanted to focus on in today’s Beckett Talks is the NEP classes. So this is the National Education Program Hands-On Residential Burners Training Classes. Let’s start with maybe who the classes are designed for and then maybe give a little bit of a brief overview about what the classes are about.
Jeff Rozga:

Yeah, very good. Yeah, the Beckett National Education Program that launched in the early 1980s really has evolved over many, many years. The NEPs that we put together are geared for the service contractor. So if you work for an oil company or an HVAC company, it’s designed for the contractors, the installing crew, to the service managers, right down to the owners.

The National Education Program is also geared around our distributors, whether you’re an inside sales counter guy, or in outside sales. It’s geared around our OEMs that make the equipment. They have technical training teams, customer service teams, along with their engineering. So the program also benefits those, to all the rep agencies in the HVAC world. So it’s pretty much geared right around anyone that’s in the HVAC industry, the entire trade.

Daniel Sferra:
So it’s not specifically for a tech or whatever, it’s pretty broad in what it can offer then for different audiences then, right?

Reserve Your Seat
Jeff Rozga:
Oh, absolutely. Yeah. It is geared for that reason. So people get a hands-on experience with the product line and the inside sales guys at the supply houses, they get familiar with the product, it’s a lot easier to sell it.
Daniel Sferra:
Got it. Okay. So, let’s give a little bit of a brief overview of what one of these NEP classes… What you do at these classes, what you go over, those kinds of things.
Jeff Rozga:

Okay. Yeah. The NEP classes start off with a brief introduction of the Beckett Company. We give them an agenda of what we’re going to discuss, and this starts off with a presentation in PowerPoint that is just a little over an hour.

Now, the NEP program changed several years ago where I took it to the next level, and knowing techs learned by doing, we turned the NEP program into hands-on. So, we’ll get into many lab exercises where the contractors will break into groups of two, and we have these individual burner kits. And inside these burner kits is the Beckett OEM Spec Guide, and they have three different selection of OEMs, and they will take a burner from scratch and they will assemble it to meet the specs for that customer to get ready to go onto a furnace, a boiler, a water heater. So there’s a variety of different applications that they will do.

After the burner training is complete, we jump into the electronic primary controls where the individuals will, once again, work in teams. They have a lab workbook with 22 lab exercises, and they will go into the lab workbook and they will program the Beckett GeniSys 7505 Primary Control, utilizing a contractor tool and also with the BeckettLink Pro. The next exercise takes them into the newer GeniSys primary control, the 7565, and they will open the My Technician app and they will go through several lab exercises of programming the GeniSys 7565. We end the program with the contractors completing the lab exercises with the AquaSmart Boiler Temperature Control. So they would set this up as it may be installed on a customer’s boiler in the field.

Daniel Sferra:
Okay. That’s quite a bit. And it goes from like 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM roughly?
Jeff Rozga:
Yes. The classes start promptly at 9:00 AM and they end just before three o’clock. And it’s a good time because it gives the opportunity for the contractors to drive, and they may drive a distance and then end at a time to kind of beat the traffic.
Daniel Sferra:

That’s good. So, when you mentioned that the controls that you’re going over now are the 7505 and the 7565. Those obviously didn’t exist a couple of years back, so is this something that if a technician or anyone that took the class last year, is this something that they should be taking again, maybe year after year? Is there a benefit to them taking it year after year, or is the coursework… I see where there’s one thing there that… Excuse me, my puppy’s yelling.

But I see where there’s benefit from a technology standpoint, but is there anything beyond that that would be beneficial for people to take it year after year?

Jeff Rozga:
Absolutely. The easiest way to answer that type of question is, first of all, any attendee that comes to any training class, not going to retain 100% what the instructor said or what they did. The old saying applies: You don’t use it, you lose it.

So, if it’s been several months since they’ve used the contractor tool or the Beckett Link Pro or the MyTechnician app, a refresher is always good. With my NEP program, the content always changes from year to year as well. All right. So they are always picking something up the second, the third, or even the fourth time. Okay. Plus again, the content, all of the program is always changing, so huge benefit.

Daniel Sferra:
Okay, cool. And then you guys, you and Alan, the other trainer, you guys recently went through the accreditation process for that. Is that why they are now available for CEUs, and were they always available for CEUs, or is this just a thing that started for this year?
Jeff Rozga:
No, the classes have always been approved by NORA, many years ago. NORA just recently started a program where they wanted accredited instructors in the heating field. And so Alan and I just both went through over 20 hours of training to become a Nora-accredited instructor. Yeah, so it’s a huge benefit.

There’s only nine credited instructors in the industry today, and three of them are from Beckett.

Daniel Sferra:
Okay. So how many classes, the NEPs, how many classes will there be this year? They start in April going-
Jeff Rozga:
The NEP classes, they do start in April, and I’m going to end, I do believe in October. I’ll run 27 NEP classes this year.
Daniel Sferra:
Cool.
Jeff Rozga:
So it’s a pretty full schedule because I have a lot of other trainings in between for personal, for OEMs, etc.
Daniel Sferra:
Got it. And they’re throughout the country, mostly in the Northeast, roughly?
Jeff Rozga:
Yeah. Most of the NEPs are scheduled in the Northeast, and a lot of people ask the reason why and when we talk about the Northeast, there’s still over 5 million homes that heat with fuel oil. From the very tip of Presque Isle, Maine, going all the way down into the Catskill areas of New York. So New York, we cover quite a lot of training. Pennsylvania and Ohio does very well also.
Daniel Sferra:
Okay, cool. So any last notes? Anything else that you may want to say to anyone that’s thinking about taking one of the classes, whether it’s the NEPs or even any of the classes at Fiskdale? I know in a future tech talk, we’re going to be talking with Alan about some of the classes he’s doing there at the Beckett Training Center in Fiskdale. Anything that you would want to say to anyone that’s thinking about potentially signing up?
Jeff Rozga:
Well, definitely. Like we’ve always said, training is very important, and that’s why Beckett does put a lot of emphasis on the training side of things. I always encourage people to take a look at the Beckett website. So on the worldwide web, we are BeckettCorp.com. Check out all the classes that are going to be held in Sturbridge at the Beckett Training Center, or my NEP programs. Sign up early. They are limited to only 16 because it is a hands-on training program. Some of those classes fill up pretty quick in certain areas, so I always encourage to sign up, register early, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate. Reach out to us at any time.
Daniel Sferra:

Cool. Well, thanks so much, Jeff.

Hopefully, this is more informative for the audience that might be looking to sign up. As Jeff mentioned, all of the training classes are available at the BeckettCorp.com website. You can register there and purchase your classes there, reserve them through the website, and we’d like to thank you for joining us for this edition of Beckett Talks.

We hope to be on a regular basis with this. We’re going to be publishing these Beckett Talks through Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and also on BeckettCorp.com. If there’s any topics that you would like for us to potentially have conversations about, we’re going to be talking with trainers, we’re going to be talking with product management, the executive team at Beckett, like I said, week after week, to discuss different topics that are interesting to the heating industry, relevant to the industry, and hopefully provide a different perspective or a helpful perspective to the heating industry as we go forward.

So, thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to seeing you next week on Beckett Talks.
